Play Therapy

“Play therapy is to children what counseling is to adults. Play therapy utilizes play, children’s natural medium of expression, to help them express their feelings more easily through toys instead of words.”

Center for Play Therapy University of North Texas

I specialize in counseling for children using a play therapy approach. Play therapy allows children to express their thoughts and feelings through play. I apply reflective listening, therapeutic limit setting, and self-esteem building strategies to help children with their emotional health.

Problem behaviors are often resolved as children learn healthy ways of coping with stress. Teaching healthy ways of how to react is a big part of our play structure.

Parents and guardians are just as important as the child for the healing process to work.

I will work closely with you. It’s important for you to support your child as they learn new coping strategies. Be sure to let them know you see their progress. Showing appreciation for their progress with a smile can go a long way. Call me if I can help.

Intro to Play Therapy

I want to share with you this 2-minute video introduction to Play Therapy for Parents. Dee C. Ray, Director, Center for Play Therapy, Professor, Counseling Program at the University of North Texas produced the video for their webpage on child play therapy. UNT is where I earned my PhD. You will also find helpful information about play therapy on their site.
