Excellent organizations exist everywhere. We trust and support these organizations’ programs and have witnessed their good to the communities they serve.
Families Against Mandatory Sentences (FAMM)
Federal prisons incarcerate tens of thousands of people for low-level, nonviolent drug offenses. I know. I was one of them. It was through the efforts of dedicated people at Families Against Mandatory Minimums (FAMM) that my release from Federal prison came 15 years early. This is one organization that my gratitude is beyond words.
FAMM’s mission is to “create a more fair and effective justice system that respects our American values of individual accountability and dignity while keeping our communities safe.” Find out more about their work online.
I have actively lobbied for Families Against Mandatory Sentences and still actively support when they need me.
Reaching out from within (ROFW)
Today, we estimate that 98% of prisoners will return to their communities. In Kansas, every prison has a reentry program that works with prisoners to change their lives before their released.
Reaching Out From Within, Inc. (ROFW) supports prison rehabilitation programs for inmates who want to make lasting changes in their behaviors. This volunteer organizations help to instill hope, confidence, and kindness that helps participants to become role models while still in prison – thus reaching even more people in need inside our prison system.
ROFW has been supporting prison rehabilitation programs since 1982. In 2019 I had the privilege to attend their symposium to learn more about Germany’s prison system from Axel Briemle. The German approach to incarceration is based on rehabilitation, not punishment. Their system varies widely from the United States approach to incarceration.
Safe Streets
A Partners for Wichita program
As a local organization, Safe Streets mission is to prevent prescription drug, alcohol, and drug abuse through community collaboration. It builds working groups of non profits, local government officials, and law enforcement in addition to counseling centers like us. By working together we help make a bigger impact for those we love.
It’s not about helping “those people’. Having “Safe Streets” serves the highest good for all of us.
I actively work as a volunteer with Safe Streets giving group presentations, panel discussions, and organizational planning. I see the value in this organization and the outreach it has poured into our community.
Stay strong and take care,
~~Peter
